Jadavpur University, Calcutta, is a premier institution on the Indian subcontinent, recognised as one of the best in the country. The Engineering Faculty has long been known for its excellence in training and in path-breaking research. The Science Faculty goes from strength to strength in its teaching programmes and research in frontier areas of knowledge. MERI's graduation course is affiliated under Jadavpur University as a degree in Marine Engineering (Bachelor of Marine Engineering).

The statutory All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) was established for proper planning & co-ordinated development of technical education system through out the country. AICTE monitors qualitative growth of technical education in relation to planned quantitative growth and proper maintenance of norms and Standards.

The aims and objectives for which the Institution of Engineers, India, is constituted, are to promote the general advancement of Engineering and Engineering Science and their applications and to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas on those subjects, amongst the members. MERI's course is recognized by Institution of Engineers (India) as equivalent to passing Sec. A and B of their examinations (Marine).
